Timng is everything

Mary Esther writes a friend:

Boy--do I hear you loud and clear on that prayer request!  There are so many things where we pray "God we want to know, just show us what it is you desire of us" and then we wait. But God is putting things together in ways we have no idea, long before we can even start to plan what will actually happen. I have to tell you something that really blessed me about making plans.

All the way back in February, Wycliffe and ViBi began talking about 3 weeks of meetings in Dallas in October/November 2009. Mark put it in his calendar to be in Dallas during that time, and to visit some supporting churches.

Two days before Mark was to leave on the trip, I got the phone call. My mom was not doing well, and if I wanted to see her, I needed to get to KC soon.  I was able to book the same flight as Mark, and we flew as far as LA together.

After the first week in Dallas, Mark flew up to KC for the weekend as planned, and got to be with my mom before she passed. The second week-end he was able to come for the funeral. He was still in Dallas while I cared for various things in Kansas City the third week.   I finished up my last appointment there on Friday afternoon  and met him in Chicago on Saturday (arriving 30 minutes before he did.)  He spoke in a church in Chicago on Sunday, and Monday we flew back to Japan together!

Can you imagine that kind of timing!  Our God was so gracious in allowing Mark to be there (plane tickets paid for by Wycliffe) and available to fly over with me, help on the weekends and fly back with me!  I am so grateful!

Ending well

Meanwhile, Mary Esther is in Kansas City having some last days with her Mom. She lived a full life and is ready to meet Jesus. We are especially thankful for some precious interactions that Mary Esther will be able to carry with her into her days of mourning. Do be praying for us, though, as it is still a painful loss.

Back from the funeral

We are now both back in Japan. Mark returned August 7 and left on the 8th for a wheelchair event and other activities in Northern Japan. Mary Esther returned on Monday the 17th.  She stayed on in Kansas City after her father's funeral for a while to care for things there.[MP]  People who knew dad from Germany, Japan and the US joined us for dad's service and we are grateful.  To all who sent cards and messages,  thank you. We learned so much about dad, and are humbled to have had such a father.

One Final Move

Mary Esther's father, Wilhelm Baum, is now with his Lord and Savior and we rejoice.

His prayers and ours were granted in that he died in his sleep and didn't seem to experience any distress or discomfort.

Before going to bed he asked for graham crackers for his night-time snack and sat in bed munching away enjoying his treats.  We are thankful he was spared the move to the Long Term Care facility.  He has now moved to his real home!  Rejoice with us.

For those in the Kansas City area, there will be a memorial service on Sunday afternoon August 2 at Blue Ridge Bible Church.

Back to Kansas City

Mary Esther leaves for Kansas City Wednesday with a stopover in LA. She writes:

Thursday morning I had a conference call at 4:30 AM with the Rehab Center where my 94 year old father is staying.  Because he is becoming increasingly weak and unable to do any rehab they will be discharging him before August 14.  This means I will need to make a trip to the US to move my father into a Long Term Care Facility. I am grateful that my brother Tim is able to come help, and that I had 10 days of time set aside now with few commitments to be able to go and care for my father. I will be leaving Japan July 29, and returning August 16. Please pray for me during this difficult time.

We have a new schedule—Get to bed by 8:00pm and up at 4:00am to call the U.S.  It’s essentially a new, unofficial half-time job. Thank God for those in KC who are helping. Pray for us as we learn to integrate new responsibilities with those we had before.

As for her dad, his condition has stabilized and he is now in a re-hab unit near his apartment.  Pray for us and those working with him there to assess well what his future care should be.

Hang on for the ride!

The Short Version

·         Mark is back from a trip to Oregon. He leaves Sunday for Bangkok.

·         Mary Esther is in Kansas City caring for her 94 year old father. She leaves Sunday for Japan.

Praise:

·         Great time with family

·         Good connections with supporters

·         Safety in travel

Pray:

·         Standby flight for the return trip to Japan

·         Good work in Bangkok

More Details

The last few weeks have been a wild ride; thanks for praying. We took a trip to Oregon to follow up some support leads there. Much of our travel was standby, and God granted us favor with many people just to get us onto the various airplanes to get to where we were going. Coming over from Japan, it was one night in business class and the next on an airport bench sleeping on top of our carry-on bags. At one point, our checked luggage was in LA, our cell phone in San Jose, and we were in Atlanta airport, but thankfully all ended up in the same place.

In the middle of the trip, Mary Esther flew to Kansas City to take care of some things for her dad (turned 94 June 3!). Now, instead of returning to Japan with Mark, she’s there again for another couple of days tying up a few more loose end. Pray for her as she negotiates American traffic, not her favorite thing to do, and then flies back to Japan alone. The last leg is from Atlanta to Narita standby, so pray that the flight will stay open and she’ll get a good seat.

Mark had to get back to Japan on time to make the flight to Bangkok. He left Thursday and arrived Friday. Sunday he leaves for Bangkok, where the United Bible Societies are holding their Triennial Translation Workshop. Mark and Pastor Matsumoto will be participating in the Sign Languages Working Track. Pray that their work will help release interest in and  resources for Sign Language Bible translation throughout the world.

PS. To follow up on our last post, the board meeting and Genesis celebration were a real boost. The reporter you prayed for was able to come to part of the celebration, and is looking forward to more interaction later.

PSS. I Just realized we never sent a post telling you about our trip so you could pray. Please accept our apologies.
